More snow and sub-zero temperatures have hit the South Island, while high winds which shut Auckland’s harbour bridge have eased, NZTA says.

Snow is again causing disruption in the South Island as cold from the Southern Ocean sweeps across the country.
Meanwhile traffic remained heavy in Auckland after the citys harbour bridge was closed for over an hour on Tuesday morning as high winds hit the top of the country.
Snow started falling down to sea level in Dunedin about 8am Tuesday and covered the ground in white within about 20 minutes.

Up to 12 injured in crash on SH 5, Bay of Plenty – police – Stuff.co.nz

Road reopens northeast of Taupō after three car crash.

Police say at least 12 people have been injured in a crash on State Highway 5 in Ohaaki, northeast of Taup.
The crash involved three cars and the status of those injured ranges from moderate to serious.
The crash occurred shortly before 11am south of Ohaaki Road.
Earlier, St Johns said two people were treated by ambulance, one with moderate injuries and one with minor injuries. Police said also those injured were taken to Rotorua Hospital.
Diversions were in place at the road off State Highway…

Family of man killed after trailer detaches from van says ‘no-one to blame’ – Stuff.co.nz

The son of Akaroa cruise boat captain Julian Yates says his dad was more than just his dad, he was his “best friend and number one companion in life”.

Julian Yates was on his way to see his mother when a trailer loaded with glass panels detached from a van and smashed into his vehicle.
The popular 52-year-old cruise boat captain and father-of-two from Akaroa, on Canterburys Banks Peninsula, died instantly.
Emergency services were called to the three-vehicle crash on State Highway 7 (Weka Pass Rd) in Hurunui, North Canterbury, at 12.10pm on Friday.
