New Zealand has joined more than 50 other nations in a pledge to ban the nuclear bomb.
The Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, also known as the Nuclear Ban Treaty, was adopted three years ago and has since reached 50 ratifications.
The treaty came into force on Friday and was celebrated by a crowd of supporters at New Brighton Pier in Christchurch.
